Prince Harry has been deployed to Afghanistan much to some peoples dismay, Sir Richard Dannatt, head of the British army, had never wanted Harry to become part of the military operation, arguing to his political masters that his deployment would distract much-needed people and resources away from combat operations and create unnecessary risk. (http://www.theglobeandmail.com/servlet/story/RTGAM.20080229.wharry29/BNStory/Front) Sir Richard Dannatt was finally forced to draw up plans to bring the prince to Afghanistan last fall. Prince Harry has always wanted to feel like a normal civilian and blend in as he describes in these quotes:
“I think dressed in the same uniform as numerous other people, thousands of other people in Afghanistan, will give me one of the best chances to be just a normal person – with a helmet on, with a shemag [scarf] with goggles on, whatever,” he said.
“As far as anybody else is concerned, they will just treat me as just a normal officer out there, hopefully. … That will be massively important for me; it could be a turning point.” (http://www.theglobeandmail.com/servlet/story/RTGAM.20080229.wharry29/BNStory/Front)
I think that if the whereabouts of the prince are public that it will cause unnecessary distraction ad danger like the head of the british army said. Having a royal prince fighting and speaking out in a place like Afghanistan is very dangerous and he could easily become a target.
The video below of Prince Harry talking in an interview is an example space binding media. The aspects of space binding media that apply to the video interview are it is electronic, easy to work with, contains lots of information, easy to transport.

Vote for Nicole Hemmer's bid to become Miss World Canada. She's from McMaster!
The Miss World Canada pageant began in 1951 as a special prelude to the Festival of Britain, and today, Miss World is one of the most recognized brand names on the planet. From Astrid to Agbani, from Antigone to Azra, from Aneta to Aishwarya, Miss World is a major figure during her yearlong reign, receiving international travel, incalculable exposure, and the joyous opportunity to work with “Beauty with a Purpose”.(http://www.missworldcanada.com/history.htm)
Nicole Hemmer who is a contestant n the pageant just graduated high school being an honor roll student with 4 of her 7 marks having an average of 96%. She is in her first year at McMaster University studying for her Honours Bachelor of Kinesiology. (http://www.missworldcanada.com/contestants/2008/official/nicole_h/index.htm)
Parts of these pageants can be seen as a type of non verbal communication. While there is a lot of discussion and question and answer parts to each pageant I want to focus mainly on the aspect of stage presence. When a contestant is walking down the runway she is presenting her self to the judges and audience, she is trying to sell herself in a sense. This is a type of non verbal communication which involves Nonverbal communication exists: behavior that has communicative value, communication that is primarily relational and nonverbal communication is culture-bound. It also relys on body language ( position and gesture),physical attractiveness and clothing. All of these influences can be seen in the clip below which demonstrates clearly the need for non verbal communication.

2: Raising the curtain on Russian beauty
The article "Raising the curtain on Russian beauty" by Anne Applebaum talks about the fairy recent explosion of beautiful Russian women into media limelight and when this explosion occured. She talks about the fact that Russia was never known for thier beautiful women and until the 90's they were no where to be found, not in magazines and especially not in sports ie. Maria Sharapova.
As Anne Applebaum describes "Soviet Union in the 1970s and 1980s, it was not widely known for feminine pulchritude." they had not come to the realization that many people in many other countries around the world had come to long before...that you could make money of beautiful women. Applebaum says there was no market for beauty in the Soviet Union which is such an odd concept since many countries had thrived on making money by selling magazine covers, tv shows, movies and products all with an 'American', 'British', or European' beauty as the face of the product. Somebody who used the media/beauty phenomenon to their advantage was Coco Chanel who was and whos franchise is still using ads with glamorous women to sell her products since the 1920's, long before Russian caught on to the trend.
The Russian beauties have definitely made their mark in media today with faces such as Natalia Vodianova
and tennis superstar Maria Sharapova who has endorsements with Nike, Lady Speadstick, Pepsi and Canon just to name a few.
Media is a very important part of communication in todays society, many designers, engineers, and visionaries use different types of media to display their message and since pictures are able to communicate some messages more clearly and effectively than words, it is a major selling advantage. Marshal McLuhan's theory of media states that media 'extends and amplifies' the senses and also extends the body.( Alder B. Ronald, Rodman George and Sevigny Alexander. Understanding Human Communication. Ontario:Oxford University Press,2008) We see this with the sultry ads that are used to sell products by arousing ones senses. This type media is an example of "cool " media because the ads give us little information usually just a small slogan or the designers name and a visual which calls on us to use our imagination to distinguish the different scenarios.
Media is an excellent way to communicate a message or a sales pitch to the general public and using the ad's and whos in them to your advantage definelty helps!

2007: The Year In Photos comment
2007: The Year In Photos can be used to demonstrate Innis' theory of a Space Binding Society. The magazine photos are a prime example of someting materialistic and impersonal valued by our society. They convey messages and stories in the form of printed media. Each photo describes/depicts a moment in time whether it be a movie scene, a presidential candidate or an artist and his work. Marshal McLuhan's theory of the Four Laws of the Medium can also be applied to the article both in the original magazine and on the internet. The Internet :
1) Enhances communication and knowlege of news and current events.
2) The radio and televison are pushed aside.
3) Retrieval of instant access as in small towns/villages.
4)Reverses into false knowledge and disimbodied intelligence
The reverse effect of the internet and all new media forms are wildley critisized, Dr. Brian Martin in: "Beyond Mass Media, Chapter 2 of Information Liberation" says " 'News' often is more like entertainment than information or education.( Alder B. Ronald, Rodman George and Sevigny Alexander. Understanding Human Communication. Ontario:Oxford University Press,2008) News reports, especially on television, are typically given without much overt context. The latest events are described, but there is no explanation of what led up to them or caused them."
